Furadantin is an antimicrobial with broad spectrum of action. It has bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity in infections of the urinary tract. Furadantin is active against Essherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Enterobacter spp., Proteus spp. It is effective mainly for urinary tract infections.

Indications
Infectious-inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract (including pyelonephritis, cystitis) caused by microorganisms sensitive to Furadantin.
Dosing regimen
The dose for adults is 50-100 mg, the multiplicity of application is 4 times per day. The daily dose for children is 5-7 mg / kg in 4 doses. The duration of treatment is 7 days. In case of necessity it is possible to continue treatment for another 3 days (only after checking the sterility of urine). During prolonged supporting treatment of Furadantin the dose should be reduced.
Side effects
The respiratory system: chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath, pulmonary infiltrates, eosinophilia, interstitial pneumonitis or fibrosis, attack of bronchial asthma in patients with asthma in past history.
The digestive system: epigastric discomfort, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, rarely - hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, abdominal pain, diarrhea.
CNS and peripheral nervous system: peripheral neuropathy, headache, nystagmus, dizziness, drowsiness.
The blood formation system: leukopenia, granulocytopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, megaloblastic anemia (these changes are reversible).
Allergic reactions: urticaria, angioedema, skin itch, rash, very rarely - anaphylactic shock.
Dermatological reactions: exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme.
Other: drug fever, arthralgia, flu-like symptoms, superinfection of the urogenital tract, usually caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Contraindications
Pronounced disorders of renal excretory function, renal failure, oliguria, pregnancy, early childhood (up to 1 month), increased sensitivity to nitrofurantoin, heart failure of II-III stage, cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, acute porphyria, lactation.
Pregnancy and lactation
Furadantin is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding).
Cautions
The risk of developing of peripheral neuropathy is increased in patients with anemia, diabetes, electrolyte derangement, lack of vitamins B, renal insufficiency.
