Side Effects
Paxil can cause moderate side effects, which do not affect patients' lifestyles. With continued therapy, side effects are reduced in intensity and frequency of occurrence and usually do not lead to the cessation of treatment. Typical for Paxil side effects include the following states: nausea, sleepiness, sweating, tremor, fatigue, dry mouth, insomnia, sexual disorders, dizziness, constipation, diarrhea and decreased appetite. There may be agitation, decreased concentration, anxiety. Rare: acute glaucoma, urinary retention and polyuria, peripheral edema, sinus tachycardia, thrombocytopenia, serotonin syndrome. Rare symptoms also include mental confusion, convulsions, photosensitivity reaction, increased bleeding of skin and mucous membranes (ecchymosis). Allergic reactions (angioedema, urticaria and skin rashes) are very rare. Increase in liver enzymes is reported. However, hepatitis with jaundice, liver failure, and without it is very rare. Cases of blurred vision are reported. With a sharp withdrawal of Paxil there may develop such symptoms as dizziness, sensory disturbances (paresthesias, sensations resembling electric shocks), sleep disturbances, agitation, anxiety, nausea and sweating.
