Indications for use of Proscar
Treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy with the purpose of:
- Prevention of urological complications (reduction of the risk of acute urinary retention) and to reduce the need for surgery;
- Reduction of the size of enlarged prostate, improvement of urine flow and reduction of intensity of symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Proscar therapy is prescribed for patients with an enlarged prostate
Dosing regimen
The recommended dose is 5 mg taken 1 time per day regardless of meals. It is possible to achieve a rapid improvement, but at least 6 months may be required in order to be able to evaluate the effectiveness of the therapy.
Contraindications to the use of Proscar
- Hypersensitivity to the drug.
Proscar is not indicated for use in women and children.
The drug should be carefully administered to patients with large residual urine and / or significantly reduced flow of urine (careful monitoring is necessary with the object to obstructive uropathy).
Use of Proscar in pregnancy and breastfeeding
Women of childbearing age and pregnant women should avoid contact with tablets of Proscar that are broken or no longer in the integrity because of the possibility of penetration of finasteride in the organism of pregnant women and subsequent risk for developing of male fetus.
Proscar tablets are coated, and it prevents contact with finasteride, on conditions that the pills are not crushed and did not lose integrity.
Proscar is not administered to women. It is not known whether Proscar penetrates into mother's milk.
Proscar is not administered to children. Its safety and effectiveness for children has not been established.
Side effects
In rare cases, Proscar may cause impotence, decreased libido (sexual desire), the decrease in volume of ejaculate (seminal fluid), gynecomastia (breast enlargement in males).
