Symmetrel is used to treat two different types of diseases: viral infections and Parkinson's disease. If you are over 60 years, you probably should take less than the usual therapeutic dose. For treatment of influenza, the elderly people are advised to take doses of 100 mg or even less for people with decreased kidney function or with a small body mass.
The best way to prevent the flu is a flu vaccination made early in the season. If you can not be vaccinated with such a vaccine or if it is contraindicated for you, you can use Symmetrel. During influenza epidemics, Symmetrel may be appointed in addition to previously made vaccination. Symmetrel is effective for treatment of influenza, but only within forty-eight hours after the first symptoms appear.
