How to use:
The recommended dose of Xenical is one capsule of 120 mg with each main meal (during the meal or not later than one hour after eating). If the meal is skipped or if the food contains no fat, then taking Xenical can also be skipped.
The patient should have balanced, moderately hypocaloric diet containing no more than 30% of calorage in the form of fat. Daily consumption of fats, carbohydrates and protein should be distributed into three main intakes.
Increase of the dose of Xenical over the recommended (120 mg 3 times daily) does not enhance its therapeutic effect.
The action of Xenical in patients with liver or kidney disease and in children has not been studied.
Side effects:
In clinical studies adverse reactions to Xenical arose mainly from the gastrointestinal tract and were caused by the pharmacological action of the drug that prevents absorption of food fat. There were frequently observed such phenomena as oily discharge from the rectum, the excretion of gas with some amount of discharge, compelling urge to stool, steatorrhea, increased frequency of defecation and fecal incontinence. Typically, these side effects are mild and transient.
Patients should be informed of the possibility of side effects from the gastrointestinal tract and should be taught of how to eliminate them through better diet, particularly in respect of the quantity of fat it contains. The use of low-fat diet reduces the risk of adverse effects from the gastro-intestinal tract.
In addition, the following adverse events can be observed from the gastrointestinal tract: abdominal pain or discomfort, meteorism, loose stools, soft stools, pain or discomfort in the rectum, the damage to the teeth or gums.
Contraindications:
Chronic malabsorption syndrome, cholestasis, hypersensitivity to the drug or any other components contained in the capsule.
